CHAPTER 27

The area they were camped in currently, was a large wooded area that their maps indicated as being south of Blue Slip Tower Site and it contained hundreds of acres of Oak trees and spruce in which they felt safe to camp for a day or two. It had taken them over two days to get past the Seymour Mansfield area and its large collection of houses and developments. Because of this they had to detour much further south off of the highway so that they wouldn’t be seen. But they were lucky in one regard as the weather continued to be fair and sunny and they were able to make fairly good time. Only a few days before, Cindy had badly twisted her ankle and that had held them up for several days until she was able to walk again without extreme pain. Finding a small creek bed, they were able to soak her ankle for several hours in the cold running water and this greatly aided in reducing the swelling and the pain. By this point in time, they felt they were close to the halfway mark and were happy that they had not run into any trouble whatsoever. The area they were traveling through currently was starting to get rougher as they approached the beginnings of Missouri Ozarks. This country included more hills and valleys and was the ultimate cause of Cindy turning her ankle while climbing up a steep bank.

By the time that they both awoke it was well into the afternoon, so Greg put his boots and socks back on and after picking up his rifle, he went to check on his snares hoping for something tasty for supper. Checking the first four locations, he was disappointed to find nothing but on the fifth and final one he did find a small rabbit. He was extremely thankful that the pot would have something in it tonight. Taking it off the trail, he quickly skinned it and gutted it (he also checked the liver to make sure that it wasn’t spotted with the signs of trichinosis) and took it to a creek and washed it out. Carrying the cleaned animal carcass in one hand and a leaf with the heart and liver in another, he made his way back to camp almost singing has he did so. They would eat good tonight.

Cindy saw Greg carrying in the rabbit so she picked up her hatchet and went to a nearby tree to cut down some limbs that they could use to cook the rabbit over the campfire. After a few whacks with the hatchet she had two forked sticks and a long pole for an impromptu rotisserie. Leaving the rabbit with her, Greg took his own hatchet and started working by cutting up some dry timber for a campfire. He selected only dry Oak branches, as they would be a much cleaner burning fire and would give off much less smoke than the spruce and pine that had so much pitch in them.
